TEACHING

TEACHING
A man is known by the company he keeps. * Lost time is never found again. * Virtue is found in the middle. * Rome wasn't built in a day.

A brain is like a muscle, it's something you should definitely train everyday; "if you don't use it, you loose it".

A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at.

After all, you won’t be able to bring your money to your grave, so why not enjoy it?

All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.

Although death is terrifying, knowing that you are living to eternity without ever being able to die is even more terrifying.

As for discipline and rules, I confess, I've never been good with either.

As to marriage or celibacy, let a man take which course he will, he will be sure to repent.

Autumn in New York, why does it seem so inviting?

Be patient. The lessons you learn today will benefit you tomorrow.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.

Be yourself  * Be/Become who/what you are. * Know yourself. * Just do it.

Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to meGoing to bed at night saying
we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me.

Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact.

(It's) Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt. * It is better to be unfaithful than (to be) faithful without wanting to be. * It's better to be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone - so far.

By all means use some time to be alone.

By and large, women can bear pain better than men.

Can you imagine a world without men? There'd be no crime, and lots of fat happy women.

Certain things in life are more important than the usual crap that everyone strives for.

Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaninful.

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work.

Come to think of it, I play kind / sort of like a robot, very mechanical. It's kinda / sorta boring.

Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.

Deep down, I happen to be very shallow.

Despite the cost of living, have you noticed how it remains so popular?

Did you guys hear the joke about the wall? It is hilarious, I am still trying to get over it.

Don't ask what your country can do for you. Ask instead what you can do for your country.

Don't ignore the love you do have in your life by focusing on the love you don't.

Do not squander time; for that’s the stuff life is made of.

Do right. Do your best. Treat others as you want to be treated.

Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.

Eating ice cream and not exercising is great. The downside is your health isn't so good.

Everything changes but change.

Envy blinds men and makes it impossible for them to think clearly.

Everyone makes their own comments. That's how rumors get started.

Fans, especially ours, demand championships. That's what we're striving for.

For there to be betrayal, there would have to have been trust first.

Given that you'll never be able to prevent copying, the question is, what can you do to minimize it?

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

He who has a why to live (for) can bear almost any how.

Here is the test to find whether your mission on Earth is finished: if you're alive, it isn't.

How you start talking to people is up/down to you. Some like to make an entrance with a simple request, such as asking for the time, in order to build conversation.

However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.

I always arrive late at the office, but I make up for it by leaving early.

I began to live as if there were no one save God and me in the world. (except for, but)

I believe in rules. Sure I doIf there weren't any rules, how could you break them?

I believe very strongly that when it comes to desire, when it comes to attraction, that things are never black and white.

I believe we all have the choice as to whether we fulfil our destiny, but our fate is sealed.

I can't play video games because I get too nervous. It just / sort of stresses me out.

I cannot believe in a god who wants to be praised all the time.

I can resist everything but/save temptation.

I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want.

I don't think about people watching me on TV. I think it would stress me out.

I don't think it's a question of age as much as it's a question of what kind of shape you're in.

I felt that I had a knack though I wouldn't go so far as to call it a talent.

find it hard to relax. I live in New York. * I find it hard to say no to people. * I find it best to keep it simple.

find it hard to get along with my mother-in-law.

I find it hard not to laugh whenever someone states that Star Trek is “above” this kind of thing. I find it hard not to take it personally.

I get stressed out really easily.

I have a knack for picking up a language in a few weeks. (get, master, learn)

I have a very strong feeling that the opposite of love is not hate - it's apathy. It's not giving a damn.

I have principles in my professional and personal life as to how things are done.

I know that I am intelligent, because I know that I know nothing.

I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want.

I love it when my books cause controversy, when people argue violently about the ending. * I love it when somebody makes me laugh - it's what attracts me to people. * I love it when someone insults me. That means that I don't have to be nice anymore.

I never set out to be weird. It was always other people who called me weird.

I no doubt deserved my enemies, but I don't believe I deserved my friends.

I say what I want to say and do what I want to do. There's no in between. People will either love you for it or hate you for it.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to live in a society where the only people allowed guns are the police and the military.

I think it would be fair to say that one of my very favourite pastimes is cooking (which is quite common in the wine business)

I think travel is probably the downside of playing professional golf, but you've got to do it.

stress out a lot. Being a perfectionist doesn't help with that! * I don't get stressed out.

I strongly / really believe what doesn't kill you (only) makes you stronger. I really believe that.

I think it's a sensible thing not to read your fan mail - not to take it too seriously.

I think, therefore I am (Descartes) vs  I doubt; therefore, perhaps I am not.

I used to get stressed out, but my cancer has put everything into perspective.

I wanted to learn everything I could about what it takes to be a great chef. It was a turning point for me.

I wish I didn't have to work for a living.

I wish I were more disciplined. *(Sometimes) I wish I were more sensible. * I wish I were braver, although I try. * I wake up every morning and I wish I were dead, and so does Jim. * I wish I were taller and thinner but the hair you can do something about. * I wish I were as good a man as my son is.

I wish I were a camel, I'd never be thirsty. (desire or imaginary situation). * I can never make up my mind if I'm happy being a flute player, or if I wish I were Eric Clapton. * I'm 5 foot 2. I wish I were 5' 6. Everyone who meets me says, 'Oh my God. You look so much taller in person. * I frequently go to the ballet, but I don’t miss it in (the sense) that I wish I were still dancing

I wish I was better looking. * I wish I was more adventurous. * I wish I was a little more gregarious and outgoing. (social, sociable, extroverted). I'm not a gardener, I wish I was. * I wish I was a teenager in the 1970s

I wish I didn't have to wake up early for work tomorrow but at least it's Friday. * I wish I didn't have to live up to anything. * A lot of women feel like thay should be enjoying motherhood, should be fulfilled and shouldn't be thinking: "I wish I didn't have to do this"

I wish there would be more movies about scientists * I wish it would stop raining * I wish Peter would study more. (complaining).

I wish there were still dinosaurs. * I wish there were more humor in my work than I see in it. * The reason I'm writting funny books is that I wish there were more.

I would love to either get a job or volunteer to help the elderly.

I would rather die of passion than of boredom.

I would rather trust a woman's instinct than a man's reason.

I'd rather annoy with the truth than please with adulation.

I'd rather be happy than right. * I'd rather be respected than loved. * I'd rather be lucky than good. * I'd rather be dead than dying.

I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.

I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.

I'd rather regret doing something than not doing something.

I'd rather work than not.

I'd rather you hurt me with the truth, than mislead me with a lie.

I'm anything but confident.

I'm interested in the fact that the less secure a man is, the more likely he is to have extreme prejudice.

I'm mostly pretty quiet on the weekends.I either read or visit friends or go hiking or something like that. Treks (backpacking) take longer tan hikes.

I'm not afraid of death, but I'm in no hurry to die. I have so much I want to do first.

I'm still me, even after all that's happened.

I'm very picky when it comes to men. I come across a man who I'm really attracted to about once every five years.

I'm not hard to get along with , I just like things done my way.

I'm slightly unsure as to what my goal is. I just keep doing Jobs.

I've always been against trying to make a movie like another movie. That's lame (boring). It's already been done, so why do it again?

If a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.

If envy were a fever all minkind would be ill.

If I couldn't laugh, I'd rather die.

If it weren't for the Beatles, I would not be a musician.

If it's a good song, it doesn't really matter if it's trendy or not. It will hit.

If it’s important (to you), you’ll find a way. If (it’s) not, you’ll find an excuse.

If there were no bad people there would be no good lawyers

If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do today?

If we were living in ancient Rome or Greece, I would be considered sickly and unattractive.

If you're lonely when (you're) alone, you're in bad company. Jean-Paul Sartre

If you can do it then why do it?

If you do ever get rejected, don't take it personally.

If you love life, don't waste time for time is what life is made up of.

If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion.

If you want to be happy, practice compassion.

If you want something go get it. Period.

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they're yours; if they don't, they never were.

If you think nobody cares if you’re alive, try missing a couple of payments.

If you want to know what a man's like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.

If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal, not to people or things.

If you're successful and stressed out, you're succeeding in spite of your stress, not because of it.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

In order for there to be a democratic society, it is necessary to support and defend human rights.

In order for there to be peace, the other side needs to decide that it also wants peace.

In order for there to be justice, victim and victimizer must have the same resources; there must be equity in trials.

In order to succeed, we must first believe that we can.

It is a clear gain to sacrifice pleasure in order to avoid pain.

It's all storytelling, you know. That's what journalism is all about.

It's best to keep equipment basic and efficient.

It's better to be hated for what you are than (to be) loved for what/someone you're not.

It's funny, as you live through something you're not aware of it.

It's good to shut up sometimes.

It's kind of fun to do the impossible.

It is not living that matters, but living rightly.

It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.

It’s not the fall that kills you; it’s the sudden stop at the end.

It's pessimism that clouds our visión.

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

It is impossible to suffer without making someone pay for it.

It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship that makes unhappy marriages.

It is sad not to love, but it is much sadder not to be able to love.

It goes without saying that children should not be given knives to play with.

It makes it hard to get over a certain period of your life when you are constantly revisiting it every night.

It makes it harder to write If I watch a lot of televisión.

Just because nobody complains doesn't mean all parachutes are perfect.

Just because you're are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.

Just like dieting, many people don’t really enjoy the whole idea of saving money because they feel deprived.

Laugh at your problems, everybody else does.

Learning is remembering what you’re interested in.

Life is definitely always about expanding. That's how we grow.

Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.

Life is too short to worry about anything. You had better enjoy it because the next day promises nothing. * Life is too short to worry about love handles

Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
Life stinks, but that doesn't mean you don't enjoy it.
Life sucks sometimes.

Life would be tragic if it weren't funny.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

Live as though it were your last day on earth. Some day you will be right.

Live your life as though your every act were to become a universal law.

Living alone makes it harder to find someone to blame.

Living is no laughing matter, I meanliving must be your whole occupation.

Love is like war: easy to begin but really hard to stop.

Love means never having to say you're sorry.

Look, you have to make mistakes. That's how you learn and that's how the world works.

Luck, that's when preparation and opportunity meet.

Marriage is give and take. You'd better give it to her or she'll take it anyway.

Maybe it's not about the happy ending. Maybe it's about the story.

Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with.

My father always used to say that when you die, if you've got five real friends, then you've had a great life.

My theory is that if you look confident you can pull off anything - even if you have no clue what you're doing.

Never get into fights with ugly people, they have nothing to lose.

Never make fun of someone who speaks broken English. It means they know another language.

No matter how tough things get, no matter how many times you lose, you keep trying to win.

Not being able to govern events, I govern myself.

Pessimism, when you get used to it, is just as agreeable as optimism.

Remind yourself that it's ok not to be perfect.

Saving money is just like making money / making it * Saving money is just like bodybuilding. It takes lots of discipline.

Saving money is just like going on a diet. There’s no better time to start it than today to reap the benefits later.

Saving people is what matters to me, and that's what should matter to youas well.

Since we have to think anyway, why not think big?

Some people just don't like having their photo taken, so try to keep motivated and if you're getting tired of rejections, take a break and try again later.

Sometimes the heart sees what is invisible to the eye.

Sometimes when the going gets tough, people give up.

Strive for continuous improvement, instead of perfection.

Success has always been a great liar.

(Perhaps) that's how you learn, by answering questions / by asking. * I played for 30 years, 20 with England and I did it by setting goals.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.

The lack of money is the root of all evil. Mark Twain

The more you know, the more you realize how little you know.

The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique.

The more you know who you are and what you want the less you let things upset you.
The only way a woman can ever reform a man is by boring him so completely that he loses all possible interest in life.

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.

The stupid neither forgive nor forget, * Neither blame nor applaud / praise yourself.

The surest thing about me is that I will change my mind.

The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.

The upside is that it is exciting and different... the downside is that it is an extremely insecure job.

The word 'happiness' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness.

There can be differences of opinion without there being personal differences.

There comes a time when money doesn't matter.

There may be good, but there are no pleasant marriages.

There might not be any easy answers to the problem of poverty.

There used to be a time when sport was all about who could run the fastest, jump the highest and score the most goals.

There is an awful lot to think about when out on the street and approaching new subjects in uncertain surroundings.

There's always been a struggle between good and evil.

There's one thing worse than being alonewishing you were.

There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.

Things don't have to change the world to be important.

Thinking is the hardest work there is.

To achieve great things we must live as though we were never going to die.

To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

To make a rock'n'roll record, technology is the least important thing.

Treat others as you want to be treated.

Trust is like an eraser. It gets smaller and smaller after every mistake.

Unlike what you may think, it is not the Lord who needs you. It is you who needs to love the Almighty. * Pepsi is not unlike Coke.

We're never so vulnerable than when we trust someone - but paradoxically, if we cannot trust, neither can we find love or joy.

We have art in order not to die of the truth.

We love life, not because we are used to living but because we are used to loving.

Well at least the upside is that we get paid for it.

What doesn't kill you (only) makes you stronger. I really believe that.

What you plant now, you will harvest later.

What's right isn't always popular. What's popular isn't always right.

When I'm sad, I stop being sad and sing instead. * When I'm sad, I stop being sad and am awesome instead. * When I'm sad, I stop being sad and start being awesome instead.

When I say I love you I actually do. I don't say it just to make conversation.

When I was 20, I thought I was 30 - but I was so far from it. When you're young, you want everything to happen now. As you mature, you can look back and see all the great things you achieved with time and patience.

When there is state there can be no freedom, but when there is freedom there will be no state.

When you reach the top, that's when the climb begins.

Why do it, just because I can? That's kind of crazy.

Why did Jesus have to die, in order for there to be forgiveness of sins?

Without music, life would be a mistake.

Women might be able to fake orgasms. But men can fake a whole relationship

Worrying works! 90% of the things I worry about never happen.

You have to always continue to strive no matter how hard things get, no matter how troubled you feel.

You have to think anywayso, why not think big?

You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you.

You need a positive mindset to overcome these obstacles.

You only get what you give. Just don't be afraid to leave.

Your beliefs don't make you a better person. Your behaviour does.

ONE-LINERS

Einstein developed a theory about space, and it was about time too.

Hypothetical questions get hypothetical answers.

I don’t drink. I don’t like it. It makes me feel good.

I had to give up masochism — I was enjoying it too much.

I intend to live forever. So far, so good.

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.

I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not quite/too sure.

It's a good thing I was born a girl, otherwise I'd be a drag queen.

Monogamy is like reading the same book over and over.

Promiscuity is like never reading past the first page.

Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they leave.

The aim of the wise is not to secure pleasure, but to avoid pain.

Ever since I went to high school I knew that I wanted to do ‘something with language’. Mathematics, physics and chemistry clearly weren’t my thing, while I could easily write an essay or two in a couple of hours. Literature and Linguistics seemed the most logical move. I obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degree without much difficulty, but after those four years I still didn’t feel ready to start working.

INTRODUCTORY MARKERS
* As long as they keep offering me some good parts and so forth - there are some parts out there that fit me pretty well - I'll keep going for a while.
* By all means, marry. If you get a good wife, you'll become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
* Even though I pretty much made my own decisions early on, when I was younger I tended to overbook my life.
Here's the good news. If I realize that I'm insane, then I'm okay with it. I'm not dangerous insane.
It basically comes down to that word: Love. I guess that's what it's all about.
It comes down to building your own world out here on the road. It's who you surround yourself with.
It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe without the aid of a Supreme Being.
It's funny, I'm very analytical in my real life, but in terms of my films, I try to not analyze them at all.
It's funny about men and women. Men pay in cash to get them and pay in cash to get rid of them. Women pay emotionally coming and going. Neither has it easy. Hedy Lamarr
* It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer.
It is not until you become a mother that your judgment slowly turns to compassion and understanding.
It is only after one is in trouble that one realizes how little sympathy and kindness there are in the world.
It's kind of like a college degree... when you get one, no one can take it from you. When you get to say for the rest of your life that you've got a platinum album, that really means something.
It's kind of like trying to make straight lines from curves, if you like.
* (Nonetheless), today it is a sad and undeniable reality that ...
* It's paradoxical, that the idea of living a long life appeals to everyone, but the idea of getting old doesn't appeal to anyone.
* It is a sad reality that with the proliferation of over 200 million guns in America, more and more children who, in my generation, would be the schoolyard bullies are now the kids bringing guns to school.
* It is hard to believe a man is telling you the truth when you know you would lie if you were in his place.
* It is literally true that you can succeed best and quickest by helping others to succeed.
* It’s not the fall that kills you; it’s the sudden stop at the end.
* It is piracy, not online music stores, which is our main competitor.
* It is strange that the years teach us patience; that the shorter our time, the greater our capacity for waiting.
Let me be clear about this. I don't have a drug problem. I have a police problem.
* (So) Let me get this straight – Donna told you she wanted to get back together and you said no? Eric: I said no. Red: What the Hell is wrong with you?
Let me tell you something that we Israelis have against Moses. He took us 40 years through the desert in order to bring us to the one spot in the Middle East that has no oil!
Likewise it is true to say that the majority of men are more in their element with machinery than the majority of women.
* Life comes down to honesty and doing what's right. That's what's most important.
Maybe it's because I'm English, but in terms of how people perceive us I only pick up on the negative side of it. (notice, become aware of, take up)
* My advice to you is (to) get married: if you find a good wife you'll be happy; if not, you'll become a philosopher.
My biggest worry is I'm running out of time and energy. Thirty years ago I thought 10 years was a really long time.
* My career has had a lot of ups and downs, but basically it has been wonderful.
* My favorite things in life don't cost any money. It's really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.
* My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.
My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.
My thing is this; if I'm sick enough to think it, then I'm sick enough to say it.
* (Well), not to put too fine a point on it, it's entirely your fault. (something that you say when you are going to say exactly what you mean, even if other people may not like it) "Excuse me for being blunt". Followed by "but" and a blunt statement.
* On the one hand, the idea of marriage and the sort of traditional family life repulses me. But on the other hand, I long for it, you know what I mean? I'm constantly in conflict with things. And it is because of my past and my upbringing and the journey that I've been on.
One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.
One of the reasons people hate politics is that truth is rarely a politician's objective. Election and power are.
* Our goal is to make the best devices in the world, not to be the biggest.
Right now in my career, it's like I'm having more fun than I've ever had, so it's kind of like, 'Man, I can't stop now.'
* So long as they don't get violent, I want to let everyone say what they wish, for I myself have always said exactly what pleased me.
* Some people hide more than others, and it does intrigue me.
* Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith.
* Somewhere deep down there's a decent man in me, he just can't be found.
The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot.
* The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.
The flip side of suicide is that it leaves a lingering question in the minds of the people who survived. It's like a cancer that's metastasized.
* The good news is there's no devil. The bad news is there's no heaven. There's nothing
The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.
The main thing about writing is... writing. Sitting your butt down in the chair and doing the work.
The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. Our greatest weakness lies in giving up.
* The one exclusive sign of thorough knowledge is the power of teaching.
The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education.
The only things Mick and I disagree about is the band, the music and what we do.
* The other side of comedy is depression. Deep, deep depression is the flip side of comedy. Casting agents don't realize it but in order to be funny you have to have that other side.
The paradox of education is precisely this - that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated. James A. Baldwin
* The question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be.
The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us.
* The truth is you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.
* The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavor to be what you desire to appear.
The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.
There are two dilemmas that rattle the human skull: How do you hang on to someone who won't stay? And how do you get rid of someone who won't go?
* There is only one thing worse than spending christmas alone: spending it with other people’s families.
There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will.
To be fair, lying is part and parcel of politics and public life.
To me, if life boils down to one thing, it's movement. To live is to keep moving.
* To put it another way: people who work must take the time to relax, to be with their families, to enjoy themselves, read, listen to music, play a sport.
True, a little learning is a dangerous thing, but it still beats total ignorance.
* What's great/weird/striking/remarkable/amazing... about ... Is (the fact) that
* We're just enthusiastic about what we do.
When it comes to life the critical thing is whether you take things for granted or take them with gratitude.
When I was younger I could remember anything, whether it happened or not.
* When you're curious, you find lots of interesting things to do.
* (So) while it is true that I find really dark stuff funny sometimes, it's also true that as a writer of books I want to have the whole range of human emotions.
When you really deep down look at it, we go to bed every night, get up every morning, stay here for 70 or 80 years, and then we die.
What it comes down to is I don't mind if Superman kills people because he has no reason not to kill people.
What makes me different from everybody else just boils down to dissatisfaction.
When it comes to renting or buying, you'll spend about the same amount. It is also put as "when it comes down to it / that"
* Without wanting to sound too cheesy, Harry Potter has been a significant part of my life since I was about 10 years old. (cursi, tacky, styleless, tasteless, inelegant). * You know, without wanting to sound too deep, life is a lot like Jazz sometimes. it's best when you improvise. Without wanting to sound patronising, it's essential to go out with a positive mindset. (attitude, mentality)
* (Do you) Know what's weird? Day by day nothing seems to change. But pretty soon, everything's different.
You reach a point where you don't work for money.
* You sort of start thinking anything's possible if you've got enough nerve."

DISCOURSE MARKERS (in the middle)

* A friend is, as it were / so to speak, a second self.
* Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid.
* Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they're yours. (Justifica tus limitaciones y te quedaras con ellas).
* Listening to my regular favourites - Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and so on and so forth (and the like) - I always feel, quite misguidedly, that nothing can be too bad if such beauty and brilliance exists in the world.
* Dreams have only one owner at a time. That's why dreamers are lonely.
* Experimenting with different sounds is great, but when it comes down to it, you're still playing a guitar.

* In football, the good thing is things can change in a second.
* It's annoying that we can't travel until Thursday, but the upside is that the fare will be cheaper then.
